Ancient Prophecies, Modern Reality

10 Signs of
Moshiach

These are some of the signs of Moshiach most apparent right now, based on Torah sources.

1

Tensions in the Persian Gulf

One of the most detailed prophecies about the era of Moshiach describes a specific chain of events involving Persia (Iran) and Arabia — a conflict that draws in the entire world.

The year that Moshiach will be revealed, the nations of the world will taunt each other. Persia will taunt Arabia... The nations of the world will tremble and be terrified... And so will Yisrael tremble and be terrified: "To where do we come and go?" And G-d says to them: "My children, do not be afraid! All that I have done, I have only done for your sake... The time of your redemption has arrived!"
Rabbi Yitzchak said: the year that King Moshiach will be revealed, all the kings of the nations of the world will taunt each other. The king of Persia will taunt the King of Arabia. And the king of Arabia will go to Aram [Edom] to get advice from them. And the king of Persia returns and destroys the entire world. And all the nations of the world trembles and is terrified and the fall upon their faces and gripped with agony, like the agony of childbirth. And Yisrael trembles and is terrified and says: "To where will we come and go?" And He says to them: "My children, do not be afraid! All that I have done, I have only done for your sake. Why are you afraid? Do not be afraid, the time of your redemption has arrived."
Yalkut Shimoni, Isaiah 499

This ancient Midrash describes a specific sequence: Persia (Iran) taunts Arabia, Arabia turns to Edom — a term for Rome, understood by commentaries as the Western superpower — for counsel, and Persia escalates to the point of global crisis — while Israel is gripped with fear.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe often cited this prophecy, emphasizing that conflict in the Persian Gulf is itself a sign that the redemption is near. In 1990, as the Gulf Crisis unfolded, the Rebbe connected these events directly to this prophecy, declaring that the Hebrew letters of the year 5751 (1990–91) form an acronym for "This will surely be a year when I will show you wonders." He assured that Israel was the safest place in the world and that the war would end by Purim — and both came true.

Today the parallels are even more striking: in March 2026, Iran launched waves of missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and other Gulf states — literally Persia attacking Arabia — while the nations of the world watch in alarm.

2

Nations Clashing

The Midrash gives a simple, unmistakable indicator: when the major powers of the world are at war with each other, the arrival of Moshiach is imminent.

Rabbi Elazar bar Avina said: If you see kingdoms clashing with one another, you should anticipate the coming of the Messiah.
Bereishit Rabbah Ch. 42

Today, the world is witnessing exactly this. Russia's war on Ukraine — now in its fourth year, with over a million casualties on both sides — has drawn the West into a deepening confrontation with Moscow. The US and Israel are waging a military campaign against Iran. And China is escalating tensions over Taiwan, with hundreds of military incursions monthly into Taiwan's airspace.

The West defeats Persia

The Talmud identifies two specific empires whose power extends all the way until the coming of Moshiach — and describes what happens between them at the very end.

Shortly before Moshiach comes, Persia will fall to Rome [the West] and Rome will hold global dominion for nine months.
Rome and Persia will exist until the coming of the Moshiach. Shortly before Moshiach comes, Persia will fall to Roman and Rome will hold global dominion for nine months, as the Talmud states in Sanhedrin (98b)
Talmud, Avoda Zara 2b

"Rome" is understood by commentaries as referring to the Western superpower, while Persia is modern-day Iran.

As of March 2026, the United States and Israel have launched a massive military campaign against Iran — Operation Epic Fury — striking thousands of targets across the country. This is, in the most literal sense, Rome waging war against Persia, exactly as the Talmud describes in the lead-up to Moshiach.

Pre-Moshiach Turmoil

The Talmud provides a strikingly detailed description of the social, moral, and economic conditions that will prevail in the generation immediately before Moshiach arrives.

In the time immediately before Moshiach, Chutzpa will increase and high costs will pile up. The vine shall bring forth its fruit, but wine will be expensive. Goverments shall turn to heresy... Places of gathering will become a place of promiscuity. The Galilee shall be destroyed, and the Gavlan [Golan] will be desolate. Inhabitants of border towns shall go round from city to city, but they will find no mercy. People who fear sin will be held in disgust, and the truth will be absent. Youth will shame the face of elders, elders will stand before minors. The face of the generation will be like the face of a dog... And upon what is there for us to rely? Only upon our Father in heaven.
In the time immediately before Moshiach, Chutzpa will increase and high costs will pile up. Although the vine shall bring forth its fruit, wine will nevertheless be expensive. And the monarchy shall turn to heresy, and there will be no one to give reproof about this. Places of gathering will become a place of promiscuity, and the Galilee shall be destroyed, and the Gavlan [Golan] will be desolate, and the men of the border shall go round from city to city, but they will find no mercy. And the wisdom of scribes will putrefy, and people who fear sin will be held in disgust, and the truth will be absent. The youth will shame the face of elders, elders will stand before minors. Normal family relations will be ruined: A son will disgrace a father; a daughter will rise up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's enemies will be the members of his household. The face of the generation will be like the face of a dog; a son will no longer be ashamed before his father. And upon what is there for us to rely? Only upon our Father in heaven.
Talmud, Sotah 49b
The Rise of "Chutzpah" (Insolence) The Mishnah states that "chutzpah will increase." This manifests as a reversal of traditional values regarding modesty, where people live in an era of extreme public exposure without shame or boundaries. However, the Lubavitcher Rebbe offered a positive application for this phenomenon: in this era, we must harness this exact "chutzpah" to proudly and unapologetically practice and spread Judaism in the public sphere.
Economic Paradox and Inflation The text predicts that "the vine will yield its fruit, but wine will be expensive" and inflation will soar. This represents a paradoxical economic situation unique to modern times: despite an era of mass production, technological advancement, and immense abundance, the cost of living remains exorbitantly high.
Secularization of Government The Mishnah warns that "the government will turn to heresy" and that "places of gathering will become places of promiscuity." This points to the modern phenomenon where governments separate themselves from religion and divine values, and public spaces lose their traditional moral standards.
Desolation of the Galilee The text explicitly states, "The Galilee will be destroyed [or become desolate], and the people of the borders will wander from city to city and find no grace." This was chillingly fulfilled in 2025, where residents of Israel's northern borders have been displaced, wandering within their own country to seek refuge.
Generational Conflict and Family Breakdown The Mishnah describes a complete inversion of respect: "Youths will shame the face of elders, elders will stand before minors, a son will disgrace a father, a daughter will rise up against her mother… a man's enemies will be the members of his household." While this highlights a painful breakdown of familial authority, it also has a uniquely positive manifestation today. The prophets predicted that before Moshiach comes, children will lead the way; today, we see a widespread phenomenon of young people returning to their Jewish roots (teshuvah) and subsequently bringing their older, less observant parents back to tradition.
The Absence of Truth "The truth will be absent, and those who fear sin will be despised." The Talmud explains the word for absent (ne'ederet) as relating to flocks (adarim) — meaning the truth will be split into different factions, with every group claiming their own exclusive, subjective truth. Furthermore, traditional wisdom and religious study will be mocked.
Leadership like a "Dog" The statement "The face of the generation will be like the face of a dog" is a direct critique of the leadership of the era.
Ultimate Reliance on G-d The Mishnah concludes these dire predictions with a poignant realization: "Upon what do we have to rely? Upon our Father in Heaven." The ultimate purpose of this societal collapse — where the familiar anchors of government, economy, medicine, and physical security all fail — is to humble humanity. It strips away our illusions of control, bringing us to the realization that our only true security and salvation can come from G-d.

An Explosion of Knowledge

The Zohar foretells a time when both spiritual and secular knowledge would surge together, preparing the world for the era of Moshiach:

In the 600th year of the 6th millennium, the gates of wisdom above and the wellsprings of wisdom below will open, preparing the world for the Era of Moshiach.
Zohar I:117a

The year 5600 in the Jewish calendar (1840 CE) corresponds to this moment. Around that time, the Industrial Revolution and modern science began rapidly transforming the world.

The Zohar describes two parallel streams: “wisdom above”—the spread of Chassidic and Kabbalistic teachings beginning in the 1700s—and “wisdom below”—the explosion of secular knowledge. Both began rising together, just as the Zohar predicted.

Immigration to Israel

The mass emigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union offered a glimpse of the biblical promise of the Ingathering of Exiles -- a foretaste of the final redemption.

The departure of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Russia to freedom, and their consequent encounter with the observance of mitzvos, foreshadows the fulfillment of the prophetic promise of the Ingathering of the Exiles. It affords a sampling of that promise, and serves as a preparation for it, in the spirit of the teaching that on the afternoon of the eve of Shabbos one should taste something of the delicacies that have been prepared for Shabbos.
From talks of the Rebbe, Shabbos Parshas Bereishis and Shabbos Parshas Bo, 5751 (1990–91)

After nearly 2,000 years of exile, the return of millions of Jews to Israel from over 100 countries, including the great wave from the former Soviet Union, offers a glimpse of the future fulfillment of the prophetic promise: "G-d will return your captivity… and gather you from all the nations where He scattered you" (Deuteronomy 30:3).

Prosperity and Abundance

Maimonides describes the conditions of the Messianic era: a world where material needs are met effortlessly, freeing humanity to pursue its true purpose.

During the Messianic era we will be free to involve themselves in Torah and wisdom without any pressures or disturbances... In that era, there will be neither famine or war, envy or competition for good will flow in abundance and all the delights will be freely available as dust. The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know G-d.
The Sages and the prophets did not yearn for the Messianic era in order to have dominion over the entire world, to rule over the gentiles, to be exalted by the nations, or to eat, drink, and celebrate. Rather, they desired to be free to involve themselves in Torah and wisdom without any pressures or disturbances, so that they would merit the world to come. In that era, there will be neither famine or war, envy or competition for good will flow in abundance and all the delights will be freely available as dust. The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know G-d.
Maimonides, Laws of Kings 12:4–5
"There will be no famine" The world now produces more than enough food for its entire population. Hunger today is a distribution problem, not a production one. In 1900, a third of Americans worked on farms. Today, just 3% produce enough to feed the nation and export worldwide. Breakthroughs in science and technology have enabled crops to grow in deserts and swamps — places once thought impossible.
"Good things will flow in abundance" We live better than any generation in history. Running water, electricity, telephones, central heating — a century ago, these were luxuries for aristocrats. The democratization of wealth has spread to all strata of society, giving everyone a taste of material comfort that previous generations could not have imagined.
"The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know G-d" Artificial intelligence and robotics are developing at a breathtaking pace, poised to replace more and more jobs across every industry. While many view this with concern, it is precisely the direction Maimonides describes: a world where machines handle the work, freeing humanity to pursue higher purpose. What the world sees as a looming crisis is, from a Torah perspective, the pathway to the Messianic condition — where material needs are met effortlessly and the occupation of the entire world is to know G-d.

Overcoming the Enemies of Israel

Maimonides lists the military victories of Moshiach as one of the defining signs of his identity — beginning with the defeat of the hostile nations surrounding Israel.

Moshiach will defeat the enemies around Israel, build the Temple in its place, and gather the dispersed of Israel.
Maimonides, Laws of Kings and Wars Ch. 11

Since October 7th, 2023, the enemies surrounding Israel have been systematically dismantled. Hamas in Gaza has been severely weakened. Hezbollah in Lebanon was decapitated in late 2024, leaving Israel's northern border quieter than it had been in years.

The Assad regime in Syria — a key Iranian proxy — was toppled in December 2024. And as of March 2026, the United States and Israel are waging a massive military campaign against Iran itself, striking thousands of targets and destroying much of its military infrastructure. One by one, the hostile forces encircling Israel are dissolving.

The Teshuva Movement

The prophets foretold that before Moshiach comes, a great spiritual awakening would sweep through the Jewish people — a mass return to G-d and Torah.

And in that day, a great shofar shall be sounded; and the strayed who are in the land of Assyria and the expelled who are in the land of Egypt shall come and worship G-d on the holy mount, in Jerusalem.
Isaiah 27:13

After the Six Day War, the Rebbe declared that the prophecy of the great shofar heralding Moshiach's coming has begun to be fulfilled — as evidenced by the teshuva movement.

There is a worldwide return to Torah observance, more so than in any era since the Temple's destruction.

Just Open Our Eyes

The Lubavitcher Rebbe declared that all the spiritual work necessary for the redemption has been completed, and all that remains is for us to open our eyes and see it.

The world is ready for Moshiach. We just need to open our eyes.
The Jewish people have completed the mission with which G‑d has charged us. Our readiness for the Redemption is also reflected in the world at large. The values of freedom, tolerance, and generosity have spread throughout the community of nations. Regimes that have opposed them have toppled, giving way for greater communication and sharing. All we need to do is open our eyes.
